This author is incredible! I have read all of the books in the Cloud Warriors series and keep looking for more. I have been reading fantasy for over 40 years and finding good fantasy seems to get harder each year. However, D.K. Holmberg makes me excited again with each of the books in all of the series that have been published. I pray that inspiration and the books continue for all the years too come.Product details

Loved the characters and build. I have not read any of the others in the. Series but inwill In the future
Tried to get into this story but couldn't. I found it confusing from the very beginning and for me it didn't get any better.
It was after reading that I discovered why this was so well written, so well detailed, and so fierce in loyalty. Yet I'm glad that this was the first read before the series as it will explain much.
I love this series. The characters are great. This book is exciting and i would recommend reading it!!! Love it
This was a great prequel to the Cloud Warrior Saga. I enjoyed the story and getting a bit more history on one of the characters. My only critique is I think the book stopped a little too soon.
I give it four stars not because it’s not a five star read - perhaps it is - but because it’s simply an introduction. Nonetheless, it’s a surprisingly good read. Characters are not perhaps sharply drawn, but satisfyingly drawn; there’s little chance of confusing major characters. The world building works very well to me. The author has crafted a magic system which is familiar enough to be instantly comfortable yet also unique. The de facto caste system, status defined by ability, works well with the magic system. Neither of the lands and societies are otherwise fleshed out, but again, this is only a entry, not really meant to stand alone. It’s a short, quick read, and time well spent. Think I’ll seek out the series and see what it costs.
Holmberg has created a fascinating fantasy world, one in which the magic is humans having varying degrees of power over the four basic "elements" earth, air, fire and water. The protagonist, Lacertin, adept in the use of earth, air and fire, was a trusted warrior of the king, sent away on special missions. But now the king is dying and Lacertin has lost his status at Court. Worse, he's wrongly accused of hastening the king's eventual death. Lacertin flees to the enemy kingdom and must embark on a new life, learning of new powers within himself. It's more of a character-driven than plot-driven fantasy; more talk than action. The story doesn't drag, though. The characters are complex; they have weaknesses and strengths, even the ones who are not meant to be sympathetic. The editing was not up to standard, however; "effect" instead of "affect," the sort of errors that should have been easily noticed. Still, both books were absorbing reads.
